A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
"Kell is one of the last Travelers-magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes, connected by one magical city.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king-George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered-and where Kell was raised alongside Rhys Maresh, the rougish heir to a flourishing empire. White London-a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive."- summary from Amazon

Schwab's second adult fantasy book (and start to a new series) is fantastic, engrossing, and introduces readers to several awesome characters and beautifully written world-building. I loved bouncing around from character to character, getting to know Kell, Rhys, and Delilah on their own as well as their interactions with each other as their stories intertwine. I had such trouble putting this book down whenever I was reading it and so I went through it way more quickly than I thought I would. Schwab is an extremely gifted writer and I am so happy to see her continue writing such fantastic novels, and I am so eager to spend two more books with these characters.

Overall, a fantastic follow-up to Vicious and I cannot wait to get started on the sequel, A Gathering of Shadows!

  1. I really had no issues with this book. It was a fascinating tale in other Londons filled with magic, power, and secrecy. I cannot wait for the next book to see where Kell and Lila's story goes next. One last thought, this is considered an adult book, but I would say it is one of those books that is really fine for everyone. It is definitely a good book for people just starting to go from YA Fantasy to Adult Fantasy.
